The thing is about this board, some really lame pop acts are acceptable for some ironic-retro-hipster-indiekid reasons I don't understand. Recent discussion topics have made it apparent that liking acts like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper are totally acceptable. However, everytime I've mentioned either PRIMAL SCREAM or THE STONE ROSES I've been shot down everytime. Maybe it's because they're too Northern and grim, not prentious enough, or just all-out too much fun for this board. But there we have it, I fucking love PRIMAL SCREAM and THE STONE ROSES. Deal with it kids!!

I actually dislike Bobby Gillepsie and everything he's done with Primal Scream. Well, everything, except XTRMNTR, which I consider a masterpiece, a perfect album, a classic, smoething you need in your life, etc.
But they're certainly acceptable.

I have no justifications for why I dislike some music, either.

Yeah but on the other hand one of the good things about the internet compared to real life is that you can disregard good manners and tell people what you really think about their favourite music that is actually shit.

I'll listen to John Mayer and Keiji Haino on the same day, and I know people that look down on me for both. Depends who I'm talking to.

Here, I'd probably be unable to justify liking Jimmy Eat World and R.E.M., but down the street Jandek and Acid Mothers Temple are quite unforgivable. My justifcation is that if I enjoy it then there's something non-shitty about it, even if I don't know what it is.

Down the street is probably 95% of the people I know in real life. I know maybe 3 or 4 people who are into underground/subculture music, but most of my friends don't get atonal/noise music of any kind. That may be the reason I like so much pop stuff.

The only reason I got into other kinds of music is because my ex specifically hated SY, and when we broke up it was all I listened to, for freedom. Then I actually started loving it, and followed the yellow brick road to the real music world.

I was just about to type something related to this topic, but Johnny Thunders' 'Blame it on Mom' just came on my iTunes, and I came to realise how a saxophone can so easily capsize a perfectly reasonable song.

Sorry, as you were.

I won't deny that I love the Preachers, if anything, the first 3 albums and the singles from Everything Must Go. Newer stuff doesn't float my boat as well.

The lyrics are absolutely woeful, but there's this really odd sincerity about the whole thing. It's like they were so desperate to be The Smiths, but had based their entire worship of them on reading Morrissey interviews rather than listening to the albums. I have a strange fascination with Gene that could easily see me rambling on about them forever. So I'll stop now ... for everyone's benefit. Although I could find myself referring to the topic again quite soon.

Yes your right, XTRMNTR is a killer album and essential listening. However, I've never understood why Gillespie being a dick, (which yes, he is) is a problem at all. All good rock-stars are twats as we've so throughly discovered recently, and he flies the ever-so wilting flag of rockn'roll high which few acts do these days. I feel people expect profoundity and coherant sense out of such a long-lived and prolific band, but PS are good-time music, something to drink beer too with mates and get with chicks.
