Yeah, Lee sounds pretty ridiculous. In the good way.

to further clarify on that last post RE: the Lee pissing scenario...
so I'm at that Dundee Centre for Contemporary Arts about to see me some ToL when I spy Mr Ranaldo heading into the toilet. So happens I sort of need a piss myself... plus I want to meet one of my idols. Two birds, one stone, right? So I'm standing beside him, draining my junk.. and I'm like "I'm a fan of yr work." Christ, what a dork. And he seems a bit embarrassed/amused and just says "cool! thanks! cool!" I could have glanced over and checked out his penis. I didn't. I still wonder if that was the right decision... |

I never thought I'd be the guy who'd be nervous when he'd meet his idols but goddamn I was practically hyperventilating. I chatted with Lee for a couple of minutes, I told him how nice his Drift performance was and he seemed to appreciate it. He signed my copies of SYR2, EVOL and Confusion is sex. Than later on I saw Thurston and asked him to sign the albums too. He came off a little irritated but I suppose he was tired or something cause they all seemed pretty eager to leave the venue. I was too nervous to make conversation so I just said "Thanks, I really appreciate it". After each album he signed he was like "Cool dude, that's awesome".
And that's basically it, I didn't ask for a picture cause I didn't want to bother them any longer.

Short story #1
I met Thurston and Kim at the Roundhouse show in London and asked them if I could take a picture with them. Thurston said "yeah, sure", so sonicl took the picture, I said "Thanks a lot" and ran away. Short story #1 I met Lee at the Text of Light show in Czech republic a couple of months ago (went there with fellow boardie greenlight), we took a picture together and spoke to him for about 10 minutes (well, actually it was greenlight who spoke to him, I was just staring at him like a dumbass). Anyways, he was very polite and nice, a genuine person for sure.

In early 2005, less than a year into my full-blown sonic dementia, I ran into Thurston at Amoeba Music in LA. He had just bought Venus in Furs by Jess Franco. We didn't really talk about anything super-intense, I just geeked out and thanked him for being awesome. He was totally cool, and tall as fuck.
Earlier this year I talked to Lee and Leah after one of their shows in Manhattan. Both were cordial and we talked about Agnes Varda movies. Then Lee recorded a shout-out for my radio show. I had to change pants afterward. Funny, neither individual appeared to have an inkling that they are in fact gods. I would love to meet Kim but the word is that she's mad intimidating and I think I would just fall to my knees and start bawling at her feet. |

I've never met anyone in SY, but just last night I had this weird dream in which I took my daughter to the grocery store where we ran into Thurston and Kim and talked about cereal for a while. This is especially embarrassing because I woke up feeling really nervous about what to say next.

My first near encounter with them was in 1986 when I was getting high with my friends in the alley behind the Retro (the club they played that night) in Seattle and they arrived in their van and almost hit us. Thurston was driving.
Then I went to an in-store signing at Tower Records in Seattle when Dirty was coming out and had them sign my copy of Kill Yr. Idols. The line was totally around the block, so they had no time to talk to anyone and looked bored out of their skulls. Especially since nearly everyone there was having them sign new cd copies of Dirty. When I handed them Kill Yr. Idols, Lee was obviously really jazzed for a moment of old school variety as he signed it "YES! YES! YES!" Steve and I talked about how I wanted him to sign it even though he wasn't on it, so he signed the sleeve rather than the cover (and wrote "On the sleeve, Steve" too!) We were supposed to only give them one item, but I quickly handed Kim a copy of my Ciccone Youth single as well, which she signed "Durty, durty, durty" perhaps for the album coming out, or perhaps for my cheating and asking for more. I met Thurston in 1995 when he played Rodeo Records in Ellensburg WA at 11 AM and was literally waking up playing his guitar. I was in the process of breaking up with my first wife, and had him sign a copy of Easter by Patti Smith for her. I offered him a copy of my zine DystOpinion, but he had already picked up a copy I'd left in the record store. That was cool. That same year was the one I put on the first ever Olympia Experimental Music Festival. I'd written about it in the zine he'd grabbed, and secretly was wishing they'd show up to check it out. What's really bizarre is that apparently they were in Olympia to see it, but didn't end up going. They had dinner at King Solomon's Reef and told the waiter that's what they were in town to do. But they never showed, and I know for sure because the Midnight Sun, where we had it then was really tiny, and most of the time I worked the door myself. Apparently when the waiter recognized Lee and said, "Y-your Lee Ranaldo", Lee responded, "Yes, do I know you?" I can only guess they ended up partying with Slim Moon or something instead. I talked to Thurston briefly last year too in Portland for the Leaves Outside the Academy show. Mostly I asked if he minded me shooting flash photography, because I wasn't sure if it wasn't going to be a really, really mellow acoustic thing, and I didn't want to be an ass. He was totally fine with it of course. |

me and my friend drove out to hoboken for a thurston solo show. second timei was going to see them. we were early so we decided to grab a bite to eat and a couple of beers. as soon as i walked in, my friend motioned to me. and i saw thurston at a table with his posse, eating some grub.
even better, we got seated at the table right next to him. he gave me the 'eye' too because i was wearing a dino jr. t-shirt. after eating, i got up and met the man. wished him a good show and took a picture of him. i think he was eating onion rings. i saw steve standing and got a picture with him as well. completely awesome show as well. shitty camera phone. "rocking the camera phone eh?" thurston moore |
