the only companies that would want government favors under laissez-faire are the ones that are having the shite beaten out of them by the competition. if we didn't allow that the mediocre companies would fail (as the market says they should) and we would be left only with the successful companies, who again would have no reason to pour funds into the coffers of politicos so long as they didn't negatively interfere with their affairs by . . . er, regulating their business.

so yeah, different strokes.

True, but allowing business to line congressional pockets with money is a laissez-faire attitude in itself.

As I recall, before good ol' TR the economic system of the US was very laissez faire and it had a ton of problems. The train, oil, and steel industries were disgusting, and progressivism alleviated that. The problem was that progressivists didn't know when to stop and ended up hurting those industries a lot.

but it was also just about the greatest period of economic expansion in human history. the major industrialists such as carnegie and rockefeller almost singlehandedly pulling us out of an agrarian, slave-based hierarchy and into an industrial society from whom millions profited (financially and/or through enormous leaps and bounds in the quality of life) has to count for something.

And in the process called in some pinkertons to slaughter underpaid protesting workers.

eh? when? maybe they fired them for walking out when they needed them, but no one has a right to a job in the first place. seriously, i'm curious to know if that ever happened. even if murder did occur it would be the fault of a few nutjobs who should have been met with the full force of the law, not with the capitalistic system itself.

During the Homestead Strike, the arrival, on July 6, 1892, of a force of 300 Pinkerton detectives from New York and Chicago resulted in a fight in which about 11 men were killed, and to restore order two brigades of the state militia were called out.
-Wikipedia

Andrew Carnegie ordered the Pinkertons in on the strikers and the Pinkertons were well known to be nutjobs. He knew what he was doing. And he was one of the robber barons that was looked on kindly by history.

The main reason I don't like capitalism is because men use it as an excuse to do ANYTHING for the sake of profits.

The reason I don't like communism is because it doesn't motivate anyone.

Either way, were fucked!

Any debate of politics on an Internet forum, where teenagers are present, can come to no good. Or maybe it can be the best thing in the world. Depends on the teenagers, of course.

Also, I like how, since communism and capitalism are going to screw us up, we turn to the politics of no hope. How very emo.

This is the one I have. Chicks dig the Velvet Underground.

No girls have ever complimented me on my Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, or Joy Division shirts though.

My friend recently told me that the mallcore kid's favorite store (hot topic) has started carrying VU merchandise. Time for it go the way of the ramones I suppose.

That's interesting. Whatever. I'm passed the Lou Reed phase, so when the little kids talk to me about VU, I can be say "Yeah, they were an awesome band until Cale left, then they were just a good for the albums VU and Loaded." Or I can say, "I think Jonathan Richman kick's post VU Reed's ass." Then I can maintain my cool indie status.

Oooh, that is a good one

Indie-snob Comments that I would probably make when picking up girls that will usually work against my favor:
  • David Gilmour sucks
  • The Gift is the best Velvet Underground song. It is 10 minutes of the same riff with a story told over it.
  • Trompe Le Monde is an amazing Pixies album and is very underrated
  • Radiohead are nothing compared to Jeff Buckley
  • Devo's early, heavily perverted stuff is their best.
  • Robert Smith is a pansy
  • Morissey is nothing without the Smiths
  • I think Steve Albini is misunderstood, he seems like he could be a really nice guy
  • Have you ever listened to Rapeman?
  • My favorite rapper is Kool Keith, the song Spankmaster is so catchy.
  • It is probably a good thing John Lennon was killed when he was, he was really starting to blow.
