I would say that all subcultural ideology is very dated, particularly in the normalization of the internet by equalizing access to information which, in turn, flattens cult identity. Everyone can be a little goth, a little punk, a little metal, a little sophisticated, and so on. The new "in the know" is a conflation of all of these that has made, you know, the rebellious stance of dressing up as the next thing at school entirely "out of the know."
Imagine the 80's having the internet as it is today. |

i think the word you're looking for is lazy.
i look alright though. i don't really feel the need to identify with a particular subculture. i like a little bit of everything but since i can't be everything i guess i'll just be nothing.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are coming around to that everything/nothing... uh... thing. About time, too.

Goth is my favorite type of music. The good old school stuff. The scene did a lot of changing in the 90s and went completely to hell. There's still good stuff around but you have to look in the right places and know what you're looking for. GSL had a lot of great goth stuff when they were still around. Miss that label.
As a fashion, I used to dress REALLY goth, and it slowly crept out of my wardrobe. What's generally thought of as goth nowadays had too little to do with what I was into....if you go to a goth club in my city, it's not Bauhaus or the Sisters of Mercy playing, it's VNV Nation or Combichrist. Terrible terrible music, and the people there were just...the worst. And all those hideous clothes! All the pvc and wings and fake dreadlocks...ugh. Was never about that to me, I just loved the music...and without even that I left the scene behind. I dress pretty plainly now. I can't imagine going back to that stuff, though now I DJ my own goth night here, without all the tackiness, drama, and stupid shit that follows goths around. It's much better.

Thanks for pointing that out. Another reason why I got kind of tired of the local goth scene is the music! And I'm not talking about VNV Nation or Combichrist (I think they are actually pretty good, just not what one would consider "Gothic"). I'm talking about terrible, repetetive Aggrotech and Harshsounds like this pile of shit here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9st3hTyfUo Last month there a was bigger event with a lounge and a big floor though. They played all the good oldschool stuff in the lounge. |

The Cramps? I don't know if I'd say they were goth, but they're definitely goth friendly, especially on the deathrock end of the equation.
