1) Excessive tanning is poor for you health. Tanning is just destroying skin cells via wind burns, UV rays, extreme sunlight, et cetera. I don't think being pale is unhealthy, and mild tanning be shouldn't any harm, but I know those that tan excessively aren't treating their skin nicely.
2) I agree with I think EMMAh who that she'd rather be just herself than anything different (super busty, curvy, whatever). I guess I'm the same way. I mean, I'm definitely not skinny. I eat whatever the hell I want to. But as a note, I will eat some junk food sometimes, but I also eat protein/healthy granola bars daily and drink protein shakes after every workout (also daily). It just so happens that I like to eat a bag of Skittles once every three weeks, and that I also like Clif bars and soy milk like mad. So, do what you want to do, you know? Just know that you are responsible for your weight/body/physique/you get my point. I have no washboard abs, but when I want them, I'll go get them and not blame "America" for making delicious (i.e., bad for you) potatoes fried in who knows what. |

I don't know if this is true anymore. Tasteful often magazines have women who are possibly overweight on their covers, but not for the purpose of displaying how attractive they are. Such magazines would rarely display an image of someone of might be underweight, because they are trying to emphasize the fact that being underweight is unattractive. But being over is just fine. |

I agree with this. And it's silly to think that, if given the choice, more people would rather be thought of as "too fat" than "too skinny." That's just not the way our society is. I never gave much thought to weight in general until recently. Growing up, I never really heard people I know talk about the issues they had with their bodies. It just didn't come up. I was friends with people of all sizes and still I never heard any person judge themselves against another. And then this year, I became friends with a girl who is short and although not skinny, she is not what I would call fat either. To me she has a normal girl's body type, she has a cute smiley happy face, and she is a little on the short side. Whatever. Anyway, she is the first person I've known who has just openly beaten herself up over her weight. She tells me that she has gained 30 pounds since high school ended because she eats out at restaurants all the time and doesn't order the healthiest of foods. I feel bad when she tells me that she feels unattractive, but then she'll switch gears and tell me that she knows it's easy for her to attract male attention, and it's easy for her to find a boyfriend (of which she already has one), and all of this other crap, but she doesn't like the way that she looks. And that's fine. Just because she has a boyfriend, it doesn't mean that it will automatically boost her self-esteem. But she says the most inane shit to me sometimes, like "Rebecca, if I were as skinny as you, I would be much more flirtatious than you are right now. I don't know why you don't have a boyfriend, like, all the time." How do I explain to her that the differences between the two of us, as far as physical appearance is concerned, are really not the issue here? We are not so different in that area that it would result in one of us having all the luck and the other having none. In this case, it is really about personality. Mine turns most people off. Hers does not. She makes guys feel like they are needed. I probably make them feel the opposite. And so on. I mean, there is a reason why she has never gone without having a boyfriend, and why she has had something like 30 of them in the past 5 years. I just wish she could see below the surface of things. She thinks I'm really fucked up, anyway.

I think I value her honesty, maybe. I can't relate to it (the need to be that honest all the time), but I value it.

sure she "shares" a lot, and friends don't need to be perfect-- my point simply is that according to her there's something wrong with you but by reading your report i see you as the mentally healthy one.

I don't worry that she's actually correct about any of this, if that's what you mean. I think I'm the right one, but that's a given. It's not really any kind of dilemma. I'm just trying to understand how other people think, and sharing my experiences with them. I don't think our time together is as good for me as it will hopefully be for her, however. I try to tell her, repeatedly, that she needs to respect herself, and that she should stand up for herself when her boyfriend treats her like shit (which is constantly). And when she was having doubts about continuing her education in the arts, I encouraged her to keep trying, etc. When it comes to matters of my own life, she tends to ruin things a bit, like the time she tried to fix me up with a schoolmate of ours even though I politely asked her not to. And things were somewhat awkward between me and this schoolmate for a while because of her intervention, although at this moment they are entirely back to normal and even better than before. So it's like, as disastrous as my friendship can be at times with this girl, it really only gets that way if I give her too much power. And it's never even deliberate. I don't share "special things" with her at all, she just somehow manages to act like I do, and if I'm not on guard then I'm not always prepared to deal with whatever comes next.

I have a co-worker who is always saying she is too fat, but in reality she looks fine with the body she has.
