Don't believe we've had a standards thread. Favourite standards: go.
The town I loved so well Blue eyes cryin' in the rain Blue moon of Kentucky So long, it's been good to know you I saw the light The ole triangle The Wild Rover Fields of Athenry(terrible version, obviously). Probably enough from me. I'm a bit country/ Irish-centric, I'm afraid.

I'd say, as a standard, the J Coltrane version of "My Favorite Things" can't be beat.
Also, the Robert Wyatt version of "Shipbuilding" (Written by Elvis Costello) The Miles Davis version of "Darn That Dream" The billions of versions of "Louie Louie" Glice - great call on "The Wild Rover" The mulitvarious versions of "Hey Joe" The versions of "I'm A Man" (no-one knows the original version, from my slender knowledge, but covered v well by both Muddy Waters and Bo Diddley) The many rip-offs of the "Peter Gunn" riff And on the dance tip, the "Amen" riff, for sure.

Standards are out of fashion these days. It's all about inclusivity now. Unless of course you happen to be half way intelligent, in which case you can just fuck right off.

I'll tell you what. the standard of pub staff has hit the fuckin' floor over the past ten years. It's almost embarrassing.

You're telling me. In all seriousness, some pub staff in Soho feel they have the right to be a total cunt to the patrons. What is this, a "Fame Academy" for people who want to work in a record shop? Jeez! Round here in Claphamland though, to be fair, they're pretty OK, in my opinion.

Pubs are now staffed, at least the trendier one, by students. A decent landlady/landlord is getting harder to find. Now it's all pricks with Bloc Party T shirts and myspace addresses.

I'll say this - the better gay pubs/bars are still staffed by decent people with whom you can have a chat with. The lesser places are total meh-ville. As an aside, I've always found the bar staff in the sleazier places in Berlin to be really OK. The trendier places - ugh!

I guess you could call the Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog", if you look at this:

Black Is The Colour : Couldn't find my favourite version on youtube (Davy Graham) but the Christy Moore and Espers versions are great
Ain't Nobody's Business : Another one where my favourite is by Davy Graham, this Otis Spann one is brilliant too Baby Please Don't Go : I've got so many different versions of this but the one I always go back to is the one I heard first, The Amboy Dukes version. Gloria : Hendrix's version is good as is Patti Smith's altered version

You can cunt right off with your lack of reverence, y'young faced cunt. Some songs deserve to be kept. Not that you'd understand with your ears full of shit.
