What's your favourite.
I could only include 10, so only studio albums, and no Bluejeans & Moonbeams (it's rubbish) and no Trout Mask Replica (yawn). |

I voted for Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller). But my favourite Beefheart album changes all the time. I think it's always going to be between that one, Ice Cream For Crow, Doc at the Radar Station, Trout Mask and Safe as Milk.
You could have put Bluejeans there instead of Strictly Personal which is just different versions of Mirror Man and Safe as Milk tracks. Unconditionally Guaranteed is also rubbish after all. Does anyone have the Bat Chain Puller demos by they way? I haven't heard them. |

Really, I suppose I could have excluded Bluejeans, Clear Spot, The Spotlight Kid, and Unconditionally Guaranteed. All from, what I like to call, the "shit" years. Quote:
The sound quality isn't the best, but still an excellent record. I would definitely get this before the albums I just mentioned. |

Yeah, but a lot of people rate Clear Spot and The Spotlight Kid quite highly. I don't have Clear Spot (I have heard it though) and I hardly ever listen to The Spotlight kid. It just seems quite bland. At least Unconditionally Guaranteed has Upon the My o My on it. |

I rarely play those three albums. Having said that, they're only "shit" compared to their other records. I think I'd love any album Captain Beefheart got within a mile of, excluding that live album with Zappa - my dislike of Zappa is equal to my love of Beefheart, therefore they would just cancel each other out on that record, and my world would implode, or something. |

I'd be interested in hearing the Zappa/Beefheart one. Bongo Fury isn't it? I don't hate Zappa but I don't much care for him either. I like a few things.

That's my favourite, very difficult to understand it at the first time, but so great, twisted and mad... I voted for Shiny Beast. Bongo Fury is mostly a Zappa Record, I think. A great one, with songs like "Carolina Hardcore Esctasy" or "Muffin Man". Beefheart did a really good job on it. |

I know TMR is most people's only experience of Beefheart, but I didn't want yet another TMR appreciation thread. My own view is that aside from the four albums from the "shit" years, it's my least played Beefheart record. I appreciate it more than I actually enjoy it. I would probably put Doc at the Radar Station at the top of my list (most days anyway). |

The reason I like Safe as Milk best is that it's the most unusual for Beefheart. It has that wonderful garage rock band sound mixed with that Beefheart weirdness. Like the Sonics on acid.

i'll just start by saying that trout mask replica is the greatest album ever done by anyone and i've listened to it much more than any others. it's perfect and brilliant masterpiece from beginning to end.
my second fave is safe as milk so i voted for that. but they're all good, except those 2 albums from 74. i wouldn't call 72 "shit year" since while those albums (clear spot & spotlight kid) sound commercial they're still excellent. unconditionally and moonbeams are just boring and the passion and the spirit is missing. also i've never cared much for bongo fury. |
