Sorry if this doesn't really belong here!

The Cure song, I mean, one AMG reviewer said "Never thought there was a Cure song so extreme and on the edge that even Sonic Youth paid indirect tribute to it in one of their own songs? Think again."

Does anyone have an idea what song he was referring to? Maybe it was during a concert? I always thought the Fat Man & Co. had an influence on SY.

I dont know... but to be honest a lot of that album is pretty trippy - not so much shake dog shake - but I love stuff like bananafishbones, I think it is. my mind is somewhere else at the moment. A lot of afficianodos dont like the cure i think - which i think is dumb. That being said they're contemporaries too... its easy to think the cure are a much older band - but they're not really by that much.

Shake Dog Shake came out after Shaking Hell, if that's the song I assume they are alluding to.

"Hendrix Necro" off the 100% 12"/CD single. During the somewhat tumultuous middle section, Kim chants "Shake, dog shake" several times.

Smith and The Cure have definitely been influenced by Sonic Youth over the years, as well. The Wish album (1992), in particular, appealed to me as bearing quite a few earmarks of Sonic Youth and avant-noise/grunge in general. Also, both groups over the years have been given to veering off into the dark realm of goth on various albums--e.g., Seventeen Seconds, Faith, Pornography, Confusion Is Sex, much of EVOL and A Thousand Leaves, Blood Flowers, etc.

i read an interview where robert smith said he didn't like sonic youth (silly boy) so i'm not sure their influence on him. i don't think he hated them, the interviewer was just naming bands and he was saying yes or no. the quote "too clever" comes to mind but i can't remember whether that was in regards to the youth or REM.

It's actually off topic (has nothing to do with a Cure~SY connection), but the lyrics of Shaking Hell seem to drive back to the Shaker religion. That is, if we may believe Dan Graham:

My Religion, Extract from a work tape: Ann Lee

IMHO, there is a connection between The Cure and SY. Its easy to dimiss them as later day pop band but the early stuff on Seventeen Seconds, 10:15 Saturday night really bears a resemblance to the 1982 debut.

Minimal bass, screetching guitars....bauhaus type vibe

Errr...I can't possibly think what "indirect tribute" that reviewer is talking about. The only similarity I've ever made between is SY and The Cure is that I Dreamed I Dream sounds like it could be on Seventeen Seconds or Faith. Other than that, both bands couldn't be more different.

Connecting to the thread via the Shake element, I never saw much of The Cure in Sonic Youth and vice versa.

But it comes to Shaking Hell, a pal put some of his music in his car and one song clicked.

At 1'30" or so, the repetition of shake... shake... with a prolonged shhhhh and an abrupt ake made it impossible for me no to link that Sonic Youth track to KC & the Sunshine Band's Shake Your Booty :

http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=vGjmDTvuNLM

And I mean it.

And I'd like the Youth to blend both songs together one day.
- Who am I to have hope for that?

I always found a resemblance between Robert Smith & TV's Alice...
