Klaus Kinski's hands in this scene are breathtaking. Watch for 1:24, 1:45, and 2:24 particularly. It's the little things that really get to me. I just watch this scene (and others) over and over and they're always good, like the first time, because of the details.

It's one of those that I never thought would become one of my favorite Herzog movies, but I love watching it. Even if I know I don't have time to watch the whole thing, or I'm busy, I just love putting it in and having it playing, even if it's just in the background. I must have a hand fetish or something, because my favorite moments in The Deer Hunter are the two(?) times when Christopher Walken covers his mouth with his hand to keep from crying (I assume). One happens during Russian Roulette, and the other is when he's in the hospital, sitting in the window. And he's so distressed he can hardly talk, and you can tell he's trying not to cry, so he just covers his mouth and doesn't say anything. It's really beautiful you guys. I wish I had clips. The two saddest parts of that movie, in my opinion. Even sadder than when he actually dies.

In a way it reminds me of a movie I made with my brothers, and a scene from it which consisted entirely of my brother Sam dancing to Bowie's "Let's Dance" which as you know is pretty long. The movie itself was very short, and I think that scene was longer than all the others combined. I was filming it, and somewhere in the middle I started laughing so hard I was convinced I was going to pee my pants, so I had to sit down, and by then my brother was sweating profusely because he was wearing a pair of plaid flares, a green velvet shirt, and clogs, and trying to dance. And every time I see They Live, I just equate the sunglasses fight scene with my brother dancing to "Let's Dance."
