NO, not really--just wanted to get your attention. Tonight was my first show. See.. http://www.kruiradio.org/dj-bios/?dj=391

It was actually quite the blast.

Anything you think I should play next time? The station's library is vast, so almost anything goes. Definite emphasis on the alternative, though--but I might spice it up next time with a few pieces of old vinyl.

The Dolls! Cool, yeah, definitely.

I didn't have much of a plan tonight. In fact, I pulled out a bunch of stuff at the last minute about 5 minutes before going on the air and just kind of threw things together, hoping it would sound sort of cohesive. I'll have my act more together next week. Tonight was training. It's really weird, and kind of wild, to manage adding the songs to the computer play list, lining up the next three CDs, and watching the prompts for PSAs and shit. A lot more to be aware of than at a pirate station.

Congrats on your first show =)

When I managed a band I sat in on a couple on air interviews. I loved being able to go through their library. It seemed like a totally awesome gig to be a DJ.

If it was my show I would play some Dredg, The Dear Hunter, Album Leaf, No Knife, Sigur Ros, Minus the Bear, Brazil, Animatronics, At The Drive-in, mewithoutYou, Doves, Jeremy Enigk (or any of his bands: Sunny Day Real Estate/The Fire Theft), Nurses, and Maps and Atlases.

haha. That's a list, but worth going through to see if you dig any you haven't heard of. Only ATDI, SDRE, and No Knife are now broken up. The rest are newer and could use the extra exposure.

Could they really? Seems that list is already pretty tired on the run-of-the-mill college radio stations that have (small "c") catholic listening tastes.

What brick-and-mortar media such as radio (and even online radio) needs are DJ's and hosts who are courageous enough to rise above the morass of mediocrity and shoot for greatness. Dig deep every week for new stuff even you haven't heard of. The trick is to find a good spot to mine so that you don't burn yourself out listening to a buncha crap. But once you do, you'll find that you as a DJ will have become a fruitful mine for other people who are tired of the same ol' thing. It spreads like a disease. Very slowly, but it's more impactful to your few than overhyped middling college schlock/indie rock is to the casual barely-surface-scratching music fan.

As for those records in WRUI's library, I recommend taking a weekend when you have nothing better to do and listening to every single compilation in the genre of your choice from A-Z. Keep a listening journal and write a one-sentence review of every song you hear that especially interests you. It won't take too long even if their library is as big as ours at KDVS (approx 300,000 volumes, taking up about 10,000 cubic feet). It only takes about five seconds to realize when something sucks...then just skip to the next song.

After you're done with that, you will have amassed a journal of hundreds of new bands you've just discovered, and now you can use that as a map for further exploration of the rest of your library, from A-Z, not including the compilation section. Many of those artists you just discovered will have other records there.

Your next radio show will make you sound like an absolute guru.

If ten years from now, you still haven't given up, hopefully you'll still be scavenging for new discoveries. But once you've run outta that fire, you might as well quit.

I really have no idea what is getting played on college radio at the moment. I just listed a few bands I enjoy.

I know Animatronics is a band that is not getting heard anywhere as of yet. The just put out their CD about two weeks ago. They are hardly conventional and definitely not Christian. I wouldn't expect to hear them on a radio station catering to religious bias.

I still think if there is a name on that list not heard yet, it is worth listening to. My assumption that some of them would have gone unknown was a bit hasty. I'm just used to posting on a lot of other forums where the majority of people haven't heard much.

Look what they're doing to my show. I don't mind much of this stuff. Much of it's good. But much of it is lame. Most of all, I detest being told what to play.

It makes me feel like saying fuck you, guess what, tonight we're tracking Exile on Main Street in its entirety. And I ain't taking requests.

This note on the station's listserv to its DJs this week:

Here's your weekly K... music email.

First off, here's the charts from the past week:
1 NATIONAL Boxer Beggars Banquet
2 BATTLES Mirrored Warp
3 SPOON "The Underdog" [Single] Merge
4 WILCO Sky Blue Sky Nonesuch
5 FEIST The Reminder Cherry Tree-Interscope
6 BLONDE REDHEAD 23 4AD
7 JOANNA NEWSOM Joanna Newsom And The Ys Street Band [EP] Drag City
8 AMY WINEHOUSE Back To Black Universal
9 ARCADE FIRE Neon Bible Merge
10 IMMACULATE MACHINE Fables Mint

Isn't that new Spoon single awesome? The National cd is one of my favorite of the year so far. Keep spinning Battles, as they are coming to [town] in July. While you are playing the stuff you are familar with, give some of the new stuff a try. It is all good, I promise. Here are some albums that are being grossly overlooked right now. I would love to hear these being rocked on the airwaves. Some of them are:
- Sea Wolf, "Get To The River Before It Runs Too Low"- this is the debut EP from Sea Wolf. Sea Wolf is essentially Alex Brown Church, and is out of LA. I think this band has a lot of potential. The track "You're a Wolf" is great for the radio. So you might want to check it out, if you like catchy/lush pop.
- Handsome Furs, "Plague Park"- Handsome Furs is made up of Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade and his fiancee. Very similar to Wolf Parade. www.youtube.com/watch?v=LitP_0wutqc <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LitP_0wutqc>
- Lewis and Clarke, "Blast of Holy Birth"- quality indie folk. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/articl...-of-holy-birth <http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/42907-blasts-of-holy-birth>
- Parts and Labor, "Map Maker"- this band is coming to the Picador July 5th. Really unique stuff. http://www.cokemachineglow.com/revie...maker2007.html <http://www.cokemachineglow.com/reviews/partsandlabor_mapmaker2007.html>

Here's what was added to rotation this week:
- Metric, "Grow Up and Blow Away"- this is their real debut album. Originally recorded in 2001, it wasn't released until now. Even though it shows the progress of the band, it is a quality album. KRUI favorite Emily Haines is the lead vocalist for Metric. I recommend checking out the track "Soft Rock Star".
- Wooden Wand, " James & the Quiet"- best described as psych folk. Pitchfork didn't like it, but I loved it. Recommended if you like: Devandra Banhart
- The Mooney Suzuki, "Have Mercy"- super catchy, yet soulful, rock from New York glam rockers. Check out the track "99%".
Let me know your thoughts on any of the stuff in rotation. Tell me what you love, and what you hate. I am curious to hear some opinions on the music.

* Make sure you use the K... DJ Program to log what you play during your show *

Keep the good music playing,

Wait... I said that already.
