Yesterday I went to a South Beach record store called Uncle Sam's Music. My plan was to purchase a CD based on its artwork. I think I only planned on paying $12 or $13 [... with that said I can't believe they were selling Joanna Newsom's latest and Mazzy Star's So Tonight That I Might See for $18 each].

Before I started browsing through the letter A rack I walked over to the vinyl racks in the middle of the store. I saw Feist's The Reminder, The Decemberists' The Crane Wife, CocoRosie's The Adventures of Ghosthorse... When I picked up the Rosie I was surprised by the weight of it. The cover art looked soooo much better vinyl-size. I think I nearly came holding it. It felt and looked so special. I thought, okay, vinyl is for people who care just as much about packaging as they do about the music. And while I do appreciate the convenience of the compact disc format, I think I'm finally ready to make the switch to vinyl. Finally.

With that said, if records weren't released with artwork then I'd still be clinging faithfully to CDs.

Vinyl is really the way to go if you really want to appreciate everything an album has to offer. The art work, the sound, it's just so much better. I'm still in between but yeah I love vinyl way better.

I've basically stopped buying cds (though not entirely, say if there's an album I really want, I'll still buy a cd if there is no vinyl), but I tend now to browse vinyl first. Now that I have a cash flow, my vinyl collection will BOOM!

It depends what it is as to my decision of whether I purchase vinyl or cd. I ordered a bunch from Dischord the other day for my bday this week, and they were all cd. Somethings deserve vinyl while some things deserve cd. It also depends on where I'll listen to the music, whether it's driving music etc, in which case I'll purchase cd, or if it's heavier or upbeat I tend to go cd. Or if it's something I'll sit around the house and listen to or if the listening experience just requires it, I'll purchase vinyl.

There's a cassette in that order though.

There was a stall for a record store at a show that I went to on Friday, and I desperately desperately wanted to buy some vinyl, but no matter how many times I looked I couldn't find anything I wanted.

I did, yes. It was a pretty good show - much more musically varied than I had anticipated. I was a little underwhelmed by Religious Knives - that's not to say they were bad, just not as mind-blowing as I'd thought they would be.

As one who witnessed the digital "revolution" in the 1980s, I am highly amused to see the pendulum swinging back in favor of LPs. It's so funny. People in 1987, 1988, 1989 were dumping their LPs by the boxes full, literally. You could pick them up cheap, new and sealed, in Musiclands for under five bucks as stores tried to liquidate their vinyl inventory to make way for CDs. My neighbor shouted across the yard, "Hey, you replaced your albums with CDs yet? Once you do, you won't go back. You should hear the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac CDs I bought today."

LPs were second-rate, virtually obsolete. Now they're back. And look at the prices!

"Hey, neighbor, you replaced your CDs with LPs yet? You should hear the Jesus Lizard and Big Black records I bought today."

They are more artful as vinyl. CD's with their shoddy plastic cases and the shitty tiny print on a pamphlet you have to fold out to even get a good look at SUCK ASSSSSS

I saw a bunch of indie stuff on vinyl in a used record shop today that I was tempted by a bit. Mag Earwig by GBV, Westing.. and Slanted.. by Pavement, I Can Hear the Heart.. by YLT, Murray St and a couple of others. I resisted though...they were a tenner each which isn't all that cheap but they looked liked they'd only been played a couple of times.

10 bucks each? That's not bad by today's prices.
