Do you subscribe to Bruce M. Foster's NYC-Improv Yahoo group? That guy works really hard to get as much information about any interesting gig going on in New York. Very cool dude, and I always get to find out about neat musicians through his gig announcements.

Tonic is back sort of, just got this email (note that ELECTRIC KULINTANG played with Thurston a year or so ago)...

We wish our Tonic family and friends a great holiday season and we will miss
seeing you all on New Year's Eve. Please come out to hear the great music at
the following events.

BLURRING Boundaries series at Abrons Arts Center curated by Tonic

Abrons Arts Center
466 Grand Street (F train to East Broadway or Delancey)
FOR TICKET information go to: www.tonicnyc.com

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday December 14th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* ELECTRIC KULINTANG with Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez
8pm, $12
Filipina-American Composer/Percussionist Susie Ibarra is best known for her
individual artistry on percussion and genre-defying music. Cuban born
drummer/percussionist and composer Roberto Rodriguez brings groundbreaking new
music through his original musical voice. Electric Kulintang performs new
music as well as pieces from their cd, Dialects, on Plastic Records. Special
guest guitarist Oz Noy joins them tonight.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Friday January 4th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Sylvie Courvoisier and Mark Feldman duo & Rashied Ali Quintet
Starting at 8pm, $15

* SYLVIE COURVOISIER and MARK FELDMAN
Since 1996, Courvoisier (piano) and Fledman (violin) have been performing
regulary in the US and Canada and toured widely in Europe (played in Festivals
such as Willisau, Saalfelden, Mulhouse, Partheney, Shaffhouse, Muenster,
Bath , Vancouver, Bordeaux...).
They perform the music of John Zorn, Masada Book II (Book of Angels), from
their new CD "Malphas" on Tzadik Records plus some of their own exciting
improvisations & compositions.

« ...That her music is as aesthetically beautiful as it is strange and
mysterious is only further testament to her prowess as a composer…" Thom
Jurek, All Music Guide

* RASHIED ALI QUINTET
Rashied Ali- drums; Josh Evans- trumpet; Lawrence Clark- tenor saxophone; Greg
Murphy- piano; Joris Teepe- bass.

Rashied Ali is a progenitor and leading exponent of multidirectional
rhythms/polytonal percussion. A student of Philly Joe Jones and an admirer of
Art Blakey, Ali developed the style known as "free jazz" drumming

"Although rightfully revered as one of the fathers of avant-garde drumming for
his role in John Coltrane’s last band, Rashied Ali grew up in Philadelphia
during the heyday of hard bop, so it should come as no surprise to find him at
the helm of a group that reflects the influence of Art Blakey and the Jazz
Messengers and the Max Roach-Clifford Brown Quintet, as much as that of the
freer music that flowed from the font of Coltrane." -Russ Musto

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Saturday January 5th
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* DAVE DOUGLAS BLUE NILE: THE MUSIC OF RANDY WESTON
8pm, $15

Dave Douglas - trumpet, Donny McCaslin - sax, flute, Luis Bonilla - trombone,
Marcus Rojas - tuba, Geoff Keezer - keyboards and Nasheet Waits - drums

A special New York premiere, not to be missed!
Fun and exciting new arrangements by the American Master Randy Weston. A
fascinating look into the world of this classic/eclectic composer, Douglas'
arrangements offer a new focus on the tunes, highlight some of the strong
grooves and open up great spaces for a band of today's most powerful
improvisers.

Randy Weston has had a considerable career in jazz as a pianist, composer, and
bandleader. He emerged in the mid-1950s, being voted New Star Pianist in Down
Beat magazine's International Critics' Poll of 1955, the year after his
recording debut as a leader, with the album Cole Porter In a Modern Mood. His
piano style owes much to Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk but it is highly
distinctive in its qualities: percussive, highly rhythmic, capable of
producing a wide variety of moods.

Radio Ruido:
Radio Ruido encompasses radio projects initiated by artist Tom Mulligan. Working both
solo and in collaboration, these projects entail both composed installations as well as
various improvised live sound situations. Often site-specific in content, they seek to
challenge conventional concepts of radio as well as exploring and challenging the
physicality of the performance space.

Damian Catera:
Damian Catera is an electro-acoustic composer, sound installation creator and media
artist. Catera's work reflects interests in sound based composition and improvistation,
transmission arts and sociopolitical critique. Catera's "deCompostional" process, consists
of an expanded instrument system which samples and processes live sound, a machine
improvised soundscape that is distinct in each implementation.

DJ Pause:
DJ Pause is the street smart alter-ego of dub/ electonica producer Teleseen. His modus
operandi contrasts the cold minimalisms of machine music with the warmth of the worlds
equatorial rhythms. Pause often collaborates with others in a post-jazz improvisational
electronica, re-sampling his turntable manipulations to re-double upon themselves,
finding infinite folds within a musical moment.

North Guinea Hills:
North Guinea Hills is active turntable experimentalist who often employs disjunct
recordings in addition to musique-concrete techniques to create a spontaneous
individualized soundscape. His audio collages are influenced by everything from Fluxus to
misinformed Cageisms as well as what is playing on the radio in the room next door.

Fridays, Nov. 9, 2007: 10 a.m. – Jan. 11, 2008: 4:30 p.m.
at Ontological Hysteric Theater
St. Mark's Church-in-the- Bowery, 131 E. 10th St., Manhattan, NY 10003

Watch audio/video stream of rehearsals of new Richard Foreman play every Friday.

free103point9 provides live audio and video of rehearsals for the new Richard Foreman
play every Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on free103point9 Online Radio. Richard Foreman's
latest production uses digital material filmed in Japan and England and takes place on a
stage in New York in which everything is askew -- the windows, the walls (covered with
turn of the century photographs) and the furniture, which includes two pianos. Even the
large screens on which images are projected are off kilter. Within this setting, the mind is
asked to jump from world to world, Japan to England, filmed world to live stage world.

Plunging deeper than ever into ravishing abstract theater, Richard Foreman evokes the
atmosphere of a séance, combining the tableaus filmed in Japan and England with five live
New York actors who navigate a sinking grand piano.

Performances begin Thursday, January 17, 2008.
Performers: Joel Israel, Caitlin Mcdonough-Thayer, Fulya Peker, Caitlin Rucker and Sarah
Dahlen.

I really like them, ever since I bought a compilation of their early singles by chance. They are very much a cross between Suicide/Velvet Underground/Joy Division. They even remind me of Loop on songs like 'Days'. Cool band indeed, I'd love to see them live.
