Chicago gets tough on drugs:

Tiny plastic bags used to sell small quantities of heroin, crack cocaine, marijuana and other drugs would be banned in Chicago, under a crackdown advanced Tuesday by a City Council committee. Ald. Robert Fioretti (2nd) persuaded the Health Committee to ban possession of "self-sealing plastic bags under two inches in either height or width," after picking up 15 of the bags on a recent Sunday afternoon stroll through a West Side park.

Lt. Kevin Navarro, commanding officer of the Chicago Police Department's Narcotics and Gang Unit, said the ordinance will be an "important tool" to go after grocery stores, health food stores and other businesses.

Next year, look for a ban on bags "slightly larger than those we banned last year."

....one thing i've always thought actually would be a smart thing to ban (if one were in the business of trying to criminalize drugs) ....is the sale of origami paper roses at the counter at gas stations...

if fact crack pipes are known colloquially around here as "rose stems" or just "roses." i always thought this was rhymin slang for "crack stem" >>> "rose stem" >>> "rose."

i discovered the true origin of the slang when a local crackhead was begging money for a new pipe off me. he wanted me to go into the gas station and buy a "rose" for him. i'm like "what! i'm not going in there to buy a crackpipe for you! it's a gas station! assshole!" he's all like, "no, it's legal... just ask for one of the paper roses by the counter. say it's for yr girlfriend. c'mon man!"

^ i would've done it because i have a lot of sympathy for bums, drunks, junkies etc. they have nowhere to go, if they want to get fucked up, that's fine with me. i don't blame them.

this is (obviously) utterly fucking stupid though. if they're going to ban larger ones next year, where will mums put their kids sandwiches? are they going to ban aluminum foil because people smoke heroin off of it? i doubt it.

i wrote a really good speech/paper/dissertation/thing about why we should eliminate the current US policy on drugs, not just because it's fun to get high but also it has way more to do with economic stuff than anyone cares to know. also we don't have good drug education or rehabilitation programs here... however i gave it to my friend today and THE BITCH LOST MY ONLY COPY FOREVER.

cool, how big was it and out of interest, what sort of economic stuff did you write about?

oh it was only about two pages because i consolidated it a lot. i wrote about how much the government spends on their ineffective drug "control" policies yearly (staggering figures here), how much they're spending keeping inmates locked up overcrowding our prisons, taxes etc

Prior to the final vote, Ald. Walter Burnett (27th) expressed concern about arresting innocent people. He noted that extra buttons that come with suits, shirts and blouses -- and jewelry that's been repaired -- come in similar plastic bags.

Burnett was reassured by language that states "one reasonably should know that such items will be or are being used" to package, transfer, deliver or store a controlled substance. Violators would be punished by a $1,500 fine.
