They were awesome.
Johnn Balance once wrote me a letter reviewing a tape of mine that I'd sent to him. He was pretty complimentary, and we kept in touch for a while. We used to write to each other about serial killers and cannibals and synchronicity. I only met him once, in the queue for a lecture by Terence Mckenna. I still have his letters. I have the utmost respect for Sleazy as a founder member of 3 of the bands that had a great influence on me. TG, PTV, and Coil. It's tragic the Johnn's life ended so soon, but I'm sure he would have appreciated the irony of the circumstances of his death - losing his 'balance' whilst his 'senses were deranged'

He was drunk on vodka and fell over the banister of his stairs. That's according to Sleazy, who was there when it happened. In typical fashion, the theme song to 'Are You Being Served' was sung at his funeral service.

I used to have a few Coil CDs, but when I had problems with depression a few years back I sold all the music in my collection that I found disturbing, and Coil most definitely counted as that.

I'd recommend 'Scatology', 'Music to Play in the Dark' and 'Horse Rotovator'. Their version of 'Tainted Love' is pretty immense as well.

The CDs I had were A GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS: A SILVER VOICE and A GUIDE FOR FINISHERS: A GOLDEN HAIR, which were anthologies, featuring material from throughout the band's career, created to mark Coil's live performance in Moscow on September 15, 2001. The two CDs were later rereleased as a double pack called THE GOLDEN HARE WITH A VOICE OF SILVER.

I rarely get scared by music, but Coil is the ONLY band that makes me feel "weird." Something extremely unsettling about their music. If it turns out JB and PC really were possessed by some sort of other-worldly presence, I would believe it.

indeed, I find the musick to play in the dark records and the early 80s stuff infinitely horrifying. choons like heaven's blade, who'll fall, they get me like no other. british mysticism yo.
