ok, i think this has been mentioned before, but is he really into black metal? man, he wears alot of those tees i see at his "trees" gigs, like Beherit (early black metal band from Scandanavia?)
or is it something that matt heyner has turned him onto because i do know that heyner is in a black metal band... just wondering. |

I beleive Matt Hayner had a silver plate with "Emporer" engraved into it on his guitar at Thurston's Trees gig in London. I could be wrong, but if not, thats SO fucking cool.

thurston was into venom, bathory and celtic frost since back in the day and those bands are proto-black metal (or straight out bm according to some).
so, if anything, thurston has been listening to bm since it started. |

Who DOESN'T like Black Metal? There are MANY MANY interesting things to enjoy within the black metal genre. Thurston has an eclectic taste in music, good for him.

um actually there are plenty of those who don't like black metal, like there are obviously people who don't like jazz, rock, classical, opera, country and so and so forth... i'm not saying i dislike black metal i have heard bad and good stuff like in all genres of music. Venom is pretty awesome and i remember celtic frost back when i was jr. high school, but i didn't like them and heard them again recently and i still don't really find it that good. |

wow, thats awesome. thurston really does have rad taste (despite the crap thats been getting signed to ecstatic peace lately). black metal is amazing. everything from ultra brutal darkthrone (transylvanian hunger is my favorite black metal record ever) to burzum. to a sonic youth fan trying to get into black metal id definitley reccomend burzum's anthology. some of his shit could seriously be on warp or something.
and scott v, chill. atsonicpark was not making a completley literal statement. he was saying that there is lots of things to like about black metal.

He does? Ive been contemplating getting that myself for a while now and i had no idea, problem is i have blonde hair so if i had that tattoo as well id just look like a total copycat... if only to the few people who even know about said tattoo. I always liked it because its a nice subtle image. Anyway, black metal... yeah....

I wrote my reply before I even saw what you'd written scott v.
My whole point is, to any close minded people that MAY post replies on this thread: I just don't see how someone could say "I hate that genre of music." about ANY genre. There's good shit in every genre, and there's more good shit in the black metal genre than the early-90's alterna-Dinosaur Jr bullshit most people worship on here. |

I don't think anyone is being close-minded if they simply don't like something. I don't like pickles. I've tried pickles, yes, but.... not for me.

i've listened to a good amount of metal period... and i just dont' like it. so i think i can safely say i pretty much can't stand that entire genre... at least what i've heard up to this point in my life. i find it (metal and most of it's sub-genres) kinda corny to be honest w/ ya. although i do find GWAR hilarious.

I guess my thing is, I think a lot of people here write things off without, y'know, bothering to listen to it. For example, I'll mention TOOL; automatically, visions of some idiot pothead 13 year old in a Lateralus shirt saying "fuck god!" comes in a lot of Sonic Gossip member's mind. Okay, understandable. But that overlooks the amazing artist and musical contributions that band has added to the world of popular music, right? Right.
Same with black metal. "Man, it has to suck, look at the people who like that! Look at the IMAGERY of it! It's a joke!" Who knows what people think? My point is, if you care about music, you know actual MUSICALITY, you wouldn't completely write off black metal. Almost every black metal band you'll hear has written some of the greatest metal riffs ever just as a prerequisite. I'm not a huge fan of all the imagery or the production or perhaps the band members, but talking about the music, it's usually in top form. Everyone here should at least check out Dodheimsgard. |
