Anyone here want to share how they get in a mindset when creating experimental art or music?

Any tips on thinking outside the box?

Secrets?

I'm never NOT in an experimental mind set.

I guess films are what inspires me most. If you ever are curious about what goes on in my head, watch Pinnochio 964. It pretty much sums up how I feel about life.

Also, cough syrup.

I stay experimental by refusing to learn what the box actually looks like, in a theoretical way. The less I have to deconstruct, the more of my own elements come into the reconstruction.

i wholly disagree. if you dont know what you are doing, the deconstruction becomes meaningless. one should at leat know basic musical rules in order to at least know that what they are doing is right\wrong.
you you dont deconstruct then you cant reconstruct.

for me a lot of experimentation comes from listening. but you should find your own mode of working to be comfortable in and then everything else will come much more naturally

Personally, I just try to make things that seem to me like they would be interesting to hear, see, or experience. Since I'm pretty into experimental art, I guess what I do is significantly more apt to come out that way. I also really like to deconstruct (and reconstruct) ideas which tends to create experimental variants.

Playing music with the Dead Air Fresheners we wear masks (and intentionally not the same ones nor ones particular to an individual in the group) to try to lose identity and enter a trance like amorphous state, so I guess it's kind of akin to meditating.

Thats an agless debate. Obviously many will go for the 'no form' school of thought. I have read song structure is akin to a house. And song structure is the basic foundations or walls.....

no form is great, and there are a lot of musicians that i adore that probably have no idea what they are doing. but its still better to know chords and the basic principal intervals conssonance\dissonance.

Just make music that gets you off man, do not worry a bout "experimental" or "noise" or whatever. Just trust your ears. If you like and if it gets you hard and if it rocks you then it is good. if it bores you to tears and you start thinking, "oh man I have played the skree drone for three minutes, I bet it is really starting to sound good." then it is NOT sounding good and you need to STOP

As with any creative endeavor, it probably helps to immerse yourself in the stuff you admire by other people. This is the lesson they teach in the great writing schools--to write, you have to read. Visual artists learn from the history of art. I would think they same applies to composing music. You have to know what's gone before, and what's going on now, and use that as a springboard for your own inspiration.

I was going to post something similar to this. I wonder about those who get into ''an experimental mindset'' in order to create. The act of creating something valuable surely involves some experimentation in order to get results, at least when done by a talented artist. I wouldn't call that a particularly conscious state, just something that is part of the different creative approaches. There are those who purposely create something experimental, thus contributing to the amount of garbage that litter the arts in general.

Experimental is boring now innit? It's mostly half-talented twits, am I right?

experimental, like I have stated before, is an adjective to describe risks taken in a standard format.

all it means is that you have taken a risk.

People who I generally consider to be experimental are those who worked to push technology forward and often ended up making music that wasn't particularly meant to have any artistic merit per se.

People like your Raymond Scotts and all the electronic music people who worked for tv, radio, movies etc. The majority of these people are/were waged by whoever controls the national media in whichever country they live(d). Their job is to experiment with sound, visuals etc in order to develop new technologies. That to me is very experimental.

hell, the 80's had the butthole surfers, who in their own deranged LSD addled, rage fueled way, were extremely crude yet soncially experimental, at least in the wide confines of rock music.
