i just finished thurston and coley's 'no wave', and it got me thinking. people always say dna, the contortions, mars, and teenage jesus, and if their gona go wider, add the soho contigent, bush tetras, and theoretical girls. all amazing bands indeed, but what about those bands who arent mentioned as much in the books, the mags, the myths, the interviews, the whatever the fuck. what are your fave no wave bands not mentioned enough (not neo no wave, no scissor girls or luttenbachers, please)?
red transistor-easily the most extreme and noisy no wave band. and if you ask me, possible the best no wave band period. friction: not part of the new york scene i know, but reck was an important part of new york no wave, playing in jesus and the contortions. anyways, this band fucking rules. skrontastic, noisey, occasionaly free jazz-ey, always amazing. also lasted very long considering the short lifespan of most no wave bands. 'atsureki', 'skin deep', and 'replicant walk' make my ears happy and bloody. toy killers: ive only heard this amazing free jazz/no wave band mentioned one place, weasel walter's myspace blog. luckily, weasel is my hero and i trust everything he says about tunes because this shit is a winner, skronk-fucking-tastic. heres what weasel said on his blog: Toy Killers - "The Unlistenable Years" (CD/digital download) ug27 Killer compendium of vintage 1980-1984 recordings of this mythic NYC improv/danger/noise band lead by drummers Mark E. Miller and Charles K. Noyes. Both guys can be heard on all the great, early John Zorn and Elliott Sharp records, but this was their own baby, and it's one hell of a racket! think DNA on crack meets free improvisation meets the unknown and you can imagine how great this release is. jam packed with appearances by Bill Laswell, Arto Lindsay, Michael Beinhorn, Zorn, Sharp and many more, this is a crucial slice of NO WAVE history. compiled, edited and mastered by me!

Ok , it's a scene , not a musical genre.

what band has a song called "you're crashing but you're no wave" or something like that? it has potentially ruined all soulseek searches of no wave bands from now till forever..

there's a load of bands like ESG, Liquid Liquid, you could even include Suicide, that could be called No Wave.
blame brian eno for the big no wave 4. |

its a scene and a musical genre. really dissonant music that blurs the line between punk rock and performance art, experimental, and uincompromising as hell. obviously, thats a vague description, and thats why all the no wave bands sound so distinct, and thats why it fucking rules.

batreleaser - have you got the "Speed Trials" LP? Toy Killers action there, and good too!
I have a particular fondness for "Speed Trials" - in the very early 90's, I had a crippling case of the flu, and spent all week at home sweating like a pig listening to 2 albums all week. One of them was "S.T", and it was the first time I really got into the Fall and Live Skull. I can pretty much quote the lyrics to "Tempo House" still after that listening sesh...

Yeah, I believe the only stuff they've ever offcially put out is the 7" on Ecstatic Peace. For my vague recollections, Rudolph Grey may have some live R Transistor tapes, but I don't think he's particularly into releasing them. Which, if true, is a shame.
