Three members of Sonic Youth pose with the American Idol winner
Is that a typo, or a joke? I hope it's a joke. But I would love a bigger version of that picture. |

umm so the reason thurston wrote the christgau thing, I think was because he talked shit on the first self titled record. I think. Read Confusion is Next.

yeah, like a lot of journalists of that era, christgau was quick to dismiss no wave and early sonic youth... i suppose you can't fault him too much, the early 80s probably weren't ready for such music

the joke about the american idol winner is in reference to lee ranaldo's grey hair, like the dipshit that won american idol.

Great article. Hilarious caption about the American Idol.
Christgau, though--I dunno. He always seemed a bit bloated in the ego department, but at least he's given the Youth their due. And he was totally wrong about thier first album (the s/t EP) but then not many people back in that time really understood what was going on, so we should forgive him. |

Pretty favorable article. I'm really surprised at how Mr. Christgau has changed his opinions completely around. Maybe the Kill Yr. Idols lyrics gave him a swift proverbial kick in the ass and made him realize the errors of his ways.

Christgau has been quite the fan for a while. Though it was a bit after Kill Yr Idols. I really do respect the guy. Obviously a band's goal should not be to impress people like him, but he's a very honest and opinionated man and I admire that about him, even if I disagree with some (or a lot) of his reviews. Can't blame him for not liking the first few CDs - he really didn't like them. At the time they were a revolution, not a talent. Very hard to judge that objectively. What can you do?
All of his stuff is at his website, including his ratings and summaries for every single SY album. I believe they were all written at the time they were released, too. Also, somewhere on his site there's a personal interview with Thurston and Kim, at their house, with Coco. It's crazy thinking about their history together and how they ended up there. |
