helloo.

i haven't been on this site in ages and probably noone remembers me anyway, but i just have a little question.

i'm from the uk and have never visited the states before, and i'm a trip from seattle (where i am now) to medford, oregon, then san francisco, then las vegas, phoenix, texas and new york..

basically i was wondering if anyone could give me some tips on fun things to do and see in these places, especially locations of good shops to buy new and/or used vinyl and venues to go see good music.

i reliase this is a bit cheeky and i should probably do some research myself, but i have little to no internet search talent.

of those cities, i've only been to new york. and i spent most of my time there: stalking models, watching animal collective, and drinking with crypto, so i'm probably not a good authority on the matter

dont schedule too much time in vegas, it's a horrid cesspool of humanity.

never heard of medford oregon-- what about portland?

phoenix-- another hellhole. super-hot temperatures, ulgy everything (see what's showing at modified arts though if it still exists). instead of FEnix go to monument valley instead, you eengleesh have no landscapes like that and it might just blow your mind. go to grand canyon too. flagstaff is a nice little college town.

do stop by new mexico on your way to tejas. some nice stuff i can recommend in albuquerque, santa fe, taos, everywhere. sorry i can't offer guidance or accomodations, i am a leper and i live in a cave.

texas: yuck.

new york: <3 <3 <3

what months? stuff changes with the seasons

i personally love san francisco's mission district. i also got a kick out of the castro. you might also wanna check out muir woods.

there is so much to do in new york city...what exactly are you interested in? just a hint- skip the touristy stuff and head downtown.

£$%^&%$£%£$%£$%£$%£%, alot of my trip is based around visiting my crazy hick folks, so the worst places on the trip are to see them (i'm really immersing myself!), and i'm only going to vegas really to see the pyramids (haha) and the grand canyon.

i'm here at the mo, and i'm leaving new york the 20th september, so i've got a fair bit of ground to cover in that time.

you mention portland... anything of note there? i could easily stop for a day or so on my way south through oregon...

i'm not too fussed about the touristy stuff, only really the statue of liberty because i've always loved it since ghostbusters 2, it'd just be cool to find a few nice shops and see a few shows

there is so much in new york, i dont even know where to get started.

most of the interesting shows are now located in brooklyn...but beware of the hipsters!

in terms of shops - a lot of people are attracted to soho...just south of it is canal street where you can buy and lot of cheep little gadgets and stuff.

if you want proof that punk rock is dead, go to the east village - astor place especially.

crazy hick folks! why would you wanna go elsewhere, then! imagine the documentaries that are possible...

vegas is ugly and has a horrible vibe, lots of human degradation, it can be depressing-- prostitution everywhere, broken down people, the bums of new york have a lot more soul.

but around vegas there is some amazing nature. i like the hoover dam which is not so humongous as i thought when i was a kid, but it's a relic of 30's socialistic tendencies and hence cool. grand canyon yeah, but go the north rim not the south rim-- south rim is where all the tourists flock, north is more nature.

portland: i know little of oregano but portland is famous for its music scene and good beer. actually gmku has connections there, ask him. there was this very awesome bordie, way back in the early 21st century, emma blowgun, who lived in portland. i would personally start here though: http://www.powells.com/

i am not clear about your route/itinerary-- you in nueva york now & on the 20th departing for hicksville & environs? which way? anyway, between arizona + tejas there is new mexico and i'd say go to santa fe + taos... then trinity site if you wanna see the place of the first nuke. boom. albuquerque is not that great to visit but it's ok to live-- has an airport.

what else, hmmm... i forget. explain your route & i might have some more things to suggest.

monument valley there is actually little to do but it looks cool, especially coming from yourope.

Places in San Francisco you may like:

The Elbo Room, 647 Valencia St.

SF Modern Art Museum, 151 3rd St

Golden Gate Park

Amoeba Music, 1855 Haight St

And there is all kinds of good food on Haight St. or on Clement

the best way to see the southwest is driving around the old highways in a big clunker with a boombox in the back seat, loaded on peyote and mexican weed.

seattle there is plenty to do in beltown which is up 2nd. there is one bar there called shorty's which i recommend a lot. they have shit loads of pinball machines in the back if your into that kinda thing, they also have a really good apricot beer which is worth a snifta.

capitol hill has plenty of things too. if you go up pine there are three record stores on the way up and a really good one on at the very top, also nice cafes etc. then a few blocks from there on pike there is the comet and also bimbo's cantina the basement of which is very cool indeed.

i presune you are staying at the green tortoise? if so there is soma just a few blocks down which is also nice.

you could also go north to vancouver, bc if you feel like it. thats where i live currently and thats a nice place.

portland is worth a look on the way to san francisco for sure. there is not a huge amount to do there but its a nice city and the hostels there are pretty good.
