I need all and any information on this performance. The Chris Lawrence concert chronology says only this:
Date: Monday, December 30th, 1996City: Westwood, California, USAVenue: Rhino Records Set List:
I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a video of this performance? Because if I could get ahold of this live video I would shit myself. Anyways just give any pictures, info, comments, and respect on this tremendous performance and spectacular live CD. Also did Nels use a baritone guitar during this performance?

Do you have the CD? If you don't, I'll see if there's anything on the back cover that's worth posting. If you do, I won't bother.

The performance was don on the same day as the recording of 'Pillow Wand'. You can clearly here the sections on both cd's. cd- back info: t.m. left n.c. right 1. Rhino I-Store Metasweet (part one) 45:55 a) neo-Shirelle b) model w/cig is terrorist c) where the hell is Tommy Hall d) finish yr self rec. Wayne Peet Rhino Westwood 12/30/96 My thoughts: a really great performance as Thurston and Nels always make a fun sparring duo. When you turn yer spaekers to the left or to the right balance you can hear each performer seperate respectively. I think as said before that this record could be listened after 'Pillow Wand' and you can compare both. I think the end of the cd is funny as Thurston and Nels don't seem to interlock anymore but they try and I think that's why the last track is called Finish yr self as a statement to the audience saying: well if you can do better... Anyway, if you find this, I suggest you buy this. Also buy Pillow Wand. Oh and Thurston, make a new cd with Nels will ya? |

That looks interesting. He's a great guitar player.
Wonder what it sounds like? I once met Nels while filming Lydia Lunch's "Willing victim" gig in Haarlem, Holland. Nice guy. Norman Westberg, Algis Kyzis and Vinnie Signorelli were part of the band on that tour. Lunch meets Swans meets unsane meets foetus.

thurston DID make another CD with nels- it was recorded january 25, 2001 and they perform with zeena parkins as well. its a benefit for flywheelarts.org
Artist Zeena Parkins/Nels Cline/Thurston Moore Title Live at Easthampton Town Hall Label JMZ Records JMZ 002 Notes This trio played 4 gigs on the East Coast. All of them were very satisfying, all of them were taped by somebody, but I think this night was my personal favorite. Who knows if the others will emerge. Buy this and it helps The Flywheel, a cultural center/collective in East Hampton. And, you get a good slab of string-driven instant composition. |

I don't know if Nels and Thurston would collaberate again it would be the same. They had a specific mind set for this live show, they wanted it to sound like "dream guitars". They did a fantastic job because the guitars are thick towards the beginning like clouds with Nels plucking harmonics over Thurstons guitar. I have the 4 gtrs live thing that Nels/ Thurston /Lee/ Giffoni did in 2001, but its just OK. "In-store" is one of my favorite CDs I have ever bought and it is pretty rare. However a vynil release would make me cream my pants. But does anyone know if Nels used a Baritone guitar? B/c on the back of the cd his guitar tuning knobs look rather large. I beleive this performance was before Nels bought his 56' Jazzmaster from Mike Watt. Also does anyone have any info on a video of this? Keep posting comments and information!

I was actually at the instore. You can see the back of my head on the back cover of the CD. It's been a long time and I don't remember if Nels was playing a baratone guitar, however I do remember him playing a jaguar. Also I was able to purchase the SST re-release of the Sonic Youth ep at that show.
